Hoji (ほうじ) meaning Roast and Cha (茶) meaning Tea.
This tea product has been made by roasting sencha tea which turns the leaves and stalks brown rather than the typical green colour found in sencha green tea.
Unlike other green teas that are steamed, hojicha is roasted over high heat (around 200°C).
Flavour: This roasting process gives the tea a toasty, smoky flavour with a lower caffeine amount than sencha green tea.
Less Bitter than sencha green tea due to the roasting process - Lower level of cathechins (bitter compound).
Masuoka Tea Farm: Grown and harvested by the Masuoka family, a small tea farm in Saitama Prefecture, Japan.
KoMaChi Idea: Hojicha's toasty, smoky flavour makes it ideal for a Hojicha Latte !
KoMaChi Brewing Recommendation: steeped for 30 seconds using hot water (90°C-100°C)
